Join us for a night of conversation around activism in the context of Fela Kuti’s life and work with the co-creators of Fela, Jibola Fagbamiye & Conor McCreery, and local activist Oduenyi

Fela: Music is the Weapon is a magical realism journey through the life and times of the legendary Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti. His anti-colonial, anti-fascist viewpoint is all the more important today than ever.

In 2025, Jibola Fagbamiye co-created FELA: Music Is the Weapon, an acclaimed graphic-novel biography of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, written with Conor McCreery. The book reimagines Fela’s life through magical realism, Afro-futurist symbolism, and political storytelling, positioning art itself as an act of resistance.

Fela focuses on a pivotal moment in his life, when he and his mother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the renowned Nigerian suffrage activist, were ruthlessly attacked in their own home by soldiers who suffered no repercussions for their violence. It also explores Fela’s complex relationship with women, including his mother and Sandra Izsadore, the American singer and activist who revitalised and inspired him.

Jibola Fagbamiye is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary visual artist, illustrator, and storyteller whose work sits at the intersection of African history, political resistance, and North American pop culture. Working across mixed media, digital illustration, and graphic design, he blends the visual language of propaganda posters, pop art, and comics to interrogate power, identity, consumerism, and cultural mythology.

Conor McCreery is an Eisner-nominated writer and a journalist who’s worked on two continents. He co-created the Kill Shakespeare series (IDW), an action-adventure comic take on the Bard’s characters that was adapted for the stage and board games. Conor has written for Adventure Time, Regular Show and Assassin’s Creed. In addition to Fela: Music is the Weapon, his newest projects are the YA adventure series, The Last Witch (BOOM!), the coming-of-age tale Status (Scholastic), and the horror-comedy Trickster (Twisted Publications!). He is also the co-creator of Future Now, a transmedia Sci-Fi epic.

Oduenyi is a Nigerian Irish-born Director, Curator, Warrior Poet and musician. They are a core member of TRIBE, an experimental community space built around art. Oduenyi’s work centres on world-building, but with the awareness that world destruction must come first. Through his involvement within Tribe, his work as an artist has developed towards making home in the uncomfortable, sharing the power of art and reducing hierarchy. Encouraging art as a tool of empowerment and liberation for all Black Trans and Queer people.”
